Almost $5,000 was raised for the United Way of Selma and Dallas County over the month of November during Deal Days.
Five participating dealers donated money for every car they sold in the month. Participating dealers were Moore Stewart Ford, Moore Stewart Honda, Reliable Cadillac GMC, Turner Motors and Steve Lane Auto Sales.
In total, $4,620 was raised, which was a 16 percent increase over last year, according to local United Way executive director Jeff Cothran.
Over the past four years, dealers have contributed almost $20,000 to the local United Way and their partner agencies.
“That’s really pretty strong for one private sector of the business community in Selma,” Cothran said. “The autodealers help a lot in town.”
One of the United Way’s partner agencies, the YMCA of Selma and Dallas County, helped organize this year’s Deal Days fundraiser.
“They took it over, and it was great. They energy they brought was new and fresh. It was just a relief for the United Way to have a great partner handling an important part of the annual campaign,” Cothran said.
YMCA executive director Ann Murray said the Y’s marketing and membership director Natalie Klimis helped coordinate the fundraiser with the autodealers.
“It’s always fun to be out and about,” Murray said. “They are always excited about it. Everyone was like, ‘Yes, we are in.”
The United Way is in the middle of its annual campaign that goes toward 15 agencies across Selma and Dallas County. A few of those include the American Red Cross, the YMCA, the Salvation Army, the Bosco Nutrition Center, the Cahaba Center for Mental Health, the Selma Area Food Bank and Boy and Girl Scouts.
