Members of the Selma Rotary Club took to the airwaves Monday morning to raise money for the club’s work in the community.

The club’s annual Radio Day was done at Dixie Country Super Station.

From 6 to 11 a.m., club members read ads for sponsoring businesses and talked about the club and its community service.

Radio Day is the club’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Club member Bob Kelley got the idea from the former Kiwanis Club in Selma, and the event has grown from the first year, when $4,500 was raised.

Kelley said the fundraiser has almost no cost thanks to support from Dixie Country.

About $7,000 was raised this time around. All of the money will be used in local community service.

“All of it will go back into programs and the contributions we make to other organizations around town,” said club member Catesby Jones.

Part of the money will be used to build benches in city parks this year.

This past year, the club built bleachers for soccer fields at the YMCA of Selma and Dallas County.

The Rotary Club also supports charities like the Salvation Army and gives annual scholarships to high school seniors.

Kelley said members have a good time getting together, being on the radio and talking up the Rotary Club to listeners.

“It’s good humor. Good fun,” Kelley said.

The Selma Rotary Club meets on Mondays at noon at Church Street United Methodist Church’s Windham Hall. The club’s next meeting will be Monday, Jan. 9.
