Hundreds participate in Run for Kenya
A total of 340 runners participated in Integrity Worldwide’s annual Run for Kenya through downtown Selma. Elizabeth Gilmer, who served as Integrity’s race coordinator, said 340 runners participated in this year’s event.
Morgan volleyball team clinches spot in AISA state tournament
The Morgan Academy volleyball team clinched a spot in the Alabama Independent Schools state tournament with a three-set win over Lakeside Academy. The Senators went on to finish second in their regional tournament, clinching another home game in the state quarterfinals.
The Keith volleyball team defeated Choctaw County in five sets to win the school’s first ever area championship. With the win, the Bears not only won class 2A, area 6, but also advanced to Montgomery for the South Super Regional tournament.
Lane named Selma High basketball coach
Selma named Ronald Lane, a Saints’ graduate, as the school’s new boys basketball coach. Lane served as a volunteer coach when Selma won the state championship in 1994.
Morgan’s Williams named MVP at All-Star Game
Morgan Academy’s McKenzie Williams was named the West team’s MVP at the Alabama Independent School Association All-Star Game in October.
Morgan PeeWee team goes unbeaten for second year in a row
Morgan Academy’s Pee Wee football team, which consists of fifth and sixth graders, went undefeated for the second year in a row. The team finished the year 10-0, including a win over Kingwood in a bowl game. Morgan outscored its opponents 278-18.
Southside basketball coach leaves for McAdory
Southside boys basketball coach Cedric Brown left to take a job at McAdory High School. Brown was a 2003 graduate of Southside and led the Panthers to the 2013 3A championship game against Madison Academy.
Dallas County, Keith, Southside make playoffs
All three Dallas County School teams qualified for the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs. All three teams lost in the first round of the playoffs. Dallas County lost to Beauregard, Southside fell to Montevallo and Keith lost to New Brockton.
VanDiver takes over as recreation director
For the third time in four months, the Selma Parks and Recreation Department got a new director.
Sean Vandiver was appointed to that position in November and took over for Carneetie Ellison. Ellison had been appointed to the position after Lebo Jones stepped down.
Keith, Selma win Dallas Co. Tournament
The Keith boys and Selma girls won the Dallas County Basketball Tournament at Wallace Community College Selma in December.
