Adams’ 3-point barrage helps Morgan boys win their area opener

Morgan Academy head coach Lee Tate threw his hands into the air as Britton Adams let the ball go. Adams had made two straight 3-pointers but this one, closely guarded and right after the ball had been thrown in, was probably the most ill-advised attempt of all.

Then, it went in.

Adams made all three of his 3-point attempts in the fourth quarter to lead Morgan Academy (5-8) past Fort Dale Academy 49-42 in its first area game of the year.

“He just gets like that and he’s totally confident in it. You want to kill him when he shoots it and then they drop,” Tate said with a laugh. “And you hope he doesn’t shoot another one and then he does and he makes it too. We love it when he makes them. He gets hot like that every now and then.”

Adams’ shots couldn’t have come at a better time for the Senators. Morgan opened up a 31-22 lead in the third quarter, but Fort Dale went on a 10-2 run to end the quarter. With the Senators clinging to a one-point lead, Adams knocked down a deep 3-pointer on the first possession of the fourth quarter to put Morgan up four.

A couple of minutes later he knocked down a second three, extending the Senators lead to 41-33 with 3:40 left. Fort Dale scored on back to back possessions to get within four but Adams made a third triple to make the score 44-37.

Morgan built on its advantage from there and escaped with a hard fought win.

“We probably won tonight because of those,” Tate said of Adams’ shots. “I think that’s pretty safe to say.”

Morgan couldn’t shake the Eagles, despite leading most of the night. The Senators led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter and took a 25-22 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Morgan’s pressure started to have its way in the third quarter. Dione Allen capped a 6-0 run in the third with a layup, but Fort Dale scored the next eight points to get back into it.

“This was our first area game, and we needed a victory and I’m real proud of the guys for playing as hard as they did,” Tate said. “They didn’t quit.”

Adams led the Senators in scoring with 11 points but eight different Morgan players scored in all. Ed Williams had 7 points and Sawyer Hopkins and Mason Perkins scored 6 points apiece for the Senators.

Morgan will host Monroe Academy Friday in its next game.
