PLANTERSVILLE — A late 6-0 run helped Keith hang on against an improving Dallas County team Wednesday night.
Shatavia Moore scored six straight points as the Bears took control of the game late in a 55-44 win. Moore drove to the basket and completed a 3-point play to put the Bears up 46-41 with just under three minutes to play. She then came up with a steal, made a layup and later knocked in a free throw to extend the lead to eight.
“Defense kind of opened it up for us to put pressure on them and get some easy layups. We went man [defense], they made some turnovers on our end and it was easy for us to get back and make layups,” said Keith coach Cecil Williams.
Moore scored all but two of her points in the second half and had 18 in all to lead all scorers.
Dallas County stuck around for all four quarters and was within two after a jump shot by Alexis Goodwin with 3:50 left.
The Hornets came up short but showed real progress after being on the wrong end of lopsided scores against Keith the last few years.
“I think we are starting to buy in and believe what the coaches are talking about,” said Dallas County coach Brandon Holmes.
“I think we lost tonight by the small things. We missed a couple of layups and down the stretch my girls were tired, they got winded, silly turnovers and getting careless with the basketball, but for the most part I have seen improvement from where we started to where we are now.”
Jamerah Smith led the Hornets with 10 points.
