Four new streetlights were put up this past week around Selma, and according to Mayor Darrio Melton, they’re just the beginning of a plan to add many more.
The new lights are on McDonald Avenue, L.L. Anderson Avenue and King Lane. Through a press release, the city said each will cost $50 annually.
That’s a small price to pay when it comes to ensuring citizens feel safer in their neighborhoods at night. Street lights allow people to feel better about getting into and leaving their homes after dark and also deter crime. They also make sure that drivers can see the road.
Numerous studies have proven that street lights have proven to make roads safer and the extra light certainly can’t do anything but lower the chance for crime.
There are many neighborhoods in Selma where an extra street light or two would do a lot of good. It’d be a lofty and unrealistic goal to put lights in every section of Selma, but any lights the city can add are a good decision.
