The Selma Police Department is investigating a homicide after the body of a 23-year-old Selma man was found in a car on Selma Avenue Saturday around noon.
Lt. Tory Neely with the Selma Police Department said officers responded to the scene after a call came in about a body in a vehicle.
Neely said the victim was 23 years old, and had several injuries to his limbs and head. He was found in the driver’s seat of a Mercury Marquis. The car was found at an open gate to the backyard of a Lamar Avenue home.
“It appears to be gunshots, but we can only get that from forensics,” Neely said.
Neely said the body is being sent off for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
No arrest has been made, and the name of the victim has not been released yet. Neely said Saturday afternoon crime scene technicians were processing the car the victim was found in. He said investigators were also canvasing the neighborhood to see if anyone saw or heard anything that could help them develop a lead in the case.
A crowd of people was gathered outside of a perimeter set up Saturday afternoon by investigators on Selma Avenue and in Old Live Oak Cemetery.
Several people recalled hearing gunshots early Saturday morning around 1 a.m. It is unclear when the 23-year-old was shot and how long the body was sitting in the car before it was discovered.
Neely said no more details were available at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
