The Keith High School Bears (0-1) lost on the road Friday night, 21-14 to the Winterboro Bulldogs (1-0).
The Bears had trouble taking care of the football and lost five fumbles.
Three of which came when the quarterback was sacked.
“That’s very uncharacteristic of a Keith football team,” head coach Harry Crum said. “I’ll go back and review the film to find out why we made the mistakes that we did.”
The Bulldogs controlled the game from start to finish.
The Bears were down 21-0 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The team continued to fight, and refused to be shutout, according to Crum.
Martavis Hatcher scored early in the fourth quarter to get his team on the board but was unable to complete the two-point conversion.
The Bears found the end zone again in the fourth quarter, but there were only three seconds left on the clock.
Quarterback Jared Edwards threw a 40-yard touchdown to Trashaud Jackson to make the score 21-12.
Hatcher ran the ball in for the two-point conversion, and the final score was 21-14.
The first game was full of errors, and Crum said his team just didn’t capitalize on their opportunities.
“We just blew too many opportunities to advance the ball,” Crum said.
“We’ll go back and work on handling the ball a little better, and hopefully we can correct our mistakes.”
Crum said his defense held up strong against the Bulldogs, but unfortunately gave up three big plays.
“I think they did well under the circumstances,” Crum said. “Other than giving up those three big plays, we had a really good defensive performance.”
Next Friday, The Bears will come home and host Calhoun in Orrville.
