The University of Alabama Gospel Choir will perform Sunday afternoon at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church at 2:30 p.m. The church is located at 615 Green St.
In the summer of 1971, a group of 12 black students at the University of Alabama decided to enter a talent show sponsored by the then Afro-American Association.
The students chose to sing a gospel song representative of the source of their faith. The Aug. 4, 1971, performance was the beginning of what was yet to come.
In the fall of 1971, 40 to 50 students came together with the original 12 to form the Afro-American Gospel Choir.
The choir travels throughout the Southeast ministering through song and being ambassadors for the University of Alabama.
This year the choir has 50 members.
