Kona Ice to help people relax after paying their taxes

For many, Tax Day is stressful and definitely not fun. But Selma Kona Ice is trying to change that perception.

Kona Ice is having “No Taxation without Relaxation” again this year to invite people outside for a free shaved ice to get their mind off taxes.

“It’s stressful and it’s Tax Day, so Kona Ice is out for a couple of hours giving away free shaved ice just to ease the burden of tax day, just as something fun to do,” said Selma Kona Ice owner and operator Glenn McPhillips. “It just gives them something fun to do and forget about writing a check to Uncle Sam.”

Kona Ice will be set up at the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce Tuesday, April 17 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

McPhillips said for the couple of hours that he’s out there, the adults get the opportunity to act like kids with their shaved ice.

“There’s usually a lot of laughing and smiling,” he said. “It’s mostly adults because it’s during the day, and they get to act like children for an hour or two and mixed their shaved ice with the flavor. Sometimes they comment that they get to act like a kid or they haven’t had a shaved ice in years or since they were a child, so they usually have a good time.”

McPhillips said he enjoys serving the customers and just encourages people to come out and take advantage of the cool treat on Tax Day.

“I have fun on the truck every day,” McPhillips said. “I enjoy doing it. Just come out … just chill out with us and get a free Kona Ice.”
