Kenbranesha Rayford, 20, was identified as the female victim who was shot while driving her grey Honda Wednesday afternoon.
New information has confirmed that Rayford was, in fact, alone in her vehicle. The male victim who was shot in the leg during the shooting was not in the vehicle with Rayford.
She had just left the mall where she had taken the test to enter the military. She called her mother, Markisha King, at 4:57 p.m. to surprise her with the news.
“As soon as she got off work, she went to the mall and took the test for the military.”
“She was telling me she did good on everything but the math part,” King said. “Before she got through telling me that, she said ‘Oh my God! Oh my God mama! They’re shooting. What am I supposed to do?’”
Those were the last words King heard her daughter say.
“I heard the glass break. I don’t think I heard more than two or three [shots] because at that time I started screaming ‘Ken! Where you at? Where you at?” King said.
A civilian drove Rayford straight to the hospital, according to King. She remained on the phone for 17 minutes until she could arrive at the hospital.
Once Rayford was stable, she was airlifted to UAB for further care.
“We went into a room in the emergency room and they talked to me,” she said. “They said she had got shot in the back of the head, and the bullet went through her brain and came out of the top part of her skull.”
Rayford was determined brain dead Thursday morning. Her heart tried to restart several times, but after 3 p.m. King was left with a tough decision to make.
It was after 3 p.m. when it finally stopped,” she said.” After several rounds of testing, that’s when we had to make our decision. It was tough. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my life.”
