The city of Selma Recreation Department has opened several outlets for local kids to get active this summer through its sports camps.
There is something for boys and girls of all ages who are looking for something fun and productive to do as they bide their time until the school year gets started.
“It’s basically for the kids to have something to do in the summer and have somewhere to go,” Selma Parks and Recreation Director Terry Jackson said.
Kids can play T-ball at the Selma Complex Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until noon.
“We have T-ball for 3-4-year olds, and that’s how we start out T-ball league,” Jackson said. Coaches will be at the complex to assist and supervise the kids as they learn the fundamentals of the game.
Basketball players can shoot hoops in the summer league gyms from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The 7-12 year olds will play in the School of Discovery gym. The 13-15 year olds will hoop at the R.B. Hudson gym, and the high school kids will get to play in the Selma High School gymnasium.
“It’s for girls and boys who like basketball,” Jackson said. “For the ones that are trying to play high school and middle school ball, it’ll help their game get a little better.”
Those who prefer the hard court, can join the tennis summer league from 8 a.m. until noon at Bloch Park.
Each of the summer leagues are free, and only require the kids to show up ready to play.
“They just need to show up,” Jackson said. “All of it is free for them.”
