Gallery 905 is accepting reservation for its upcoming art classes.

Nikki Gilmore, executive director of Gallery 905, said the classes are an opportunity for the children to be engaged in art during the summer months.

“The kids need a chance to express themselves, give their parents a break,” she said. “It also keeps the kids inspired by art.”

The art classes will start on July 10 and will continue each Tuesday throughout July from 9-11 a.m. July 10,17, 24 and 31 are the dates and there is a $25 fee for each class. All supplies and lunch are included in the fee.

Although the gallery has held classes in the past, having the classes on a consistent basis is new.

“This is the first year we thought we would consistently do [the classes] on a series of Tuesdays,” Gilmore said.

The classes and activities are designed for children ages 6-11, and there is a maximum of 12 students per class.

Anne Smith Reeves, daughter of local artist AC Reeves, will lead the young artists in each class. Gilmore said she is excited to see the knowledge the students bring to the classes and also what they learn. She said it will be up to the community whether or not the classes are continued in the future.

“Depending on the feedback we get from the community and other artists we may extend [the classes] to afternoon,” she said. “We’re really waiting on feedback from the parents and the kids to see what they’re interested in and what their schedules are like.”

Gilmore said the students are not bound to a commitment to the classes, but they should at least give it a shot and see how it goes.

“I’m just encouraging the community to come and try it out, and if they love it then keep on coming back,” Gilmore said.
