The Selma Police Department arrested three suspects on a variety of crimes over the last week.
Rayshawn Simmons, 20, was charged with first-degree assault Tuesday for shooting Zechariah Brown, 16, on July 22 in Keller Alley. Simmons shot Brown in the arm. It was the second time in three weeks Brown has been shot, according to Selma Police Chief Spencer Collier.
The most recent arrest was Tristan Dial, who was charged with aggravated child abuse in a case dating back to Aug. 14, 2017.
Collier said the incident occurred on the block of 1201 Woodrow Ave. at Selma Square Apartments. Dial, 31, was watching a then-23-month-old baby. When the mother returned home, the child was unresponsive. She took the child to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, but the child died in the emergency room.
The Selma Police Department handled a car chase on July 19 involving two 17-year-old teenagers in a stolen car. The chase involved two police cars, going from Highway 14 and ending somewhere between LL Anderson Avenue and Mabry Street.
Marquivous Craig was charged with first-degree receiving stolen property and attempting to elude police. Jaquinton Jermel Tolbert, the driver of the vehicle, was charged with receiving stolen property. He escaped, but the police eventually caught him two days later. Craig was taken into custody the same day.
In the other arrest, Terrance McGuire, 36, was charged with failing to register as a sex offender since 2013.
“It’s a sign we’re busy, but it’s also a sign that we’re being real effective,” Collier said. “I’m real pleased.”
