Sophia P. Kingston Elementary has new air conditioning units after a wave of thefts left the school in hot conditions at the start of the school year.
According to a tweet from the Selma City School’s website, the air conditioning units were installed on Wednesday.
This comes after a wave of thefts that occurred over the last few weeks at Kingston Elementary School, R.B. Hudson Middle School and Knox Elementary where copper wiring and components of the air conditioning systems were stolen and damaged.
At their special called meeting on Monday, the Selma City School Board approved funds be designated to pay for new units and reinforced steel cages to protect the units from future damage.
According to Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams, the total estimate is $300,000. The number could be different after labor costs and other factors.
R.B. Hudson’s repairs are first priority, according to Williams as the units damaged at the middle school cooled the majority of the building.
Williams said R.B. Hudson’s repairs are estimated at $100,000 and Knox is estimated between $35,000 and $40,000.
