The Black Belt Benefit Group is bringing something new to Selma. The non-profit organization is known for their innovative fundraisers and this weekend their first “Food Truck Saturday” is no exception. The event will feature three local food vendors and feature local music as citizens will have the chance to eat and enjoy music in downtown Selma. The event will be on Saturday, Aug. 4 from noon to 3 p.m. at Play Selma Music Hall located at 1122 Water Ave.
Event organizer Clay Carmichael said having a food truck event in Selma for the first time is sure to bring eager food truck enthusiasts.
“We just wanted to show the community we do have three food trucks, and try to give [the food trucks] an opportunity to make some money,” he said.
Tally Ho, Uncle Clyde’s Barbeque and Mike Davis’ Icecream Truck will be the food trucks selling their food to customers.
“We’re just hoping that everyone comes out and the trucks can make a dollar,” he said. “We’re just trying to help. Everybody loves food trucks and everyone seems to get excited about food trucks.”
Carmichael said this is a new and innovative way for Selma to keep money in the city by supporting local businesses.
“We just want local food trucks for now, and if we can get enough folks coming out then maybe we will go with food trucks from other places,” he said, “We want to make sure the local food trucks are doing good first.”
The success of this event will determine whether or not the organization will then branch out and have more trucks in the future.
“If they sell out of food this time then next time, we’ll bring more,” he said.
According to Carmichael, another way to make sure this event is a success is to support it by showing up and supporting these businesses. He said the more people that show up increase the chance of a successful event, thus helping ensure the businesses make money.
“Hopefully we have 100 folks,” he said. “I think it would be successful with about 100 folks.”
