Volunteering and being able to serve people puts a smile on Bill Potter’s face. Potter volunteers twice a week at the Christian Outreach Alliance Food Pantry, and said it warms his heart to know that people are benefitting from the work the organization does.
“It’s nice to see people come through and how appreciative they are,” he said. “It give you a good feeling.”
Not only does he volunteer with the local food pantry, Potter also helps organize and volunteer with several charity runs.
“I’ve been a runner just about all of my life,” he said. “So, anytime I can put on an event that gets people out and participate is a good day for me and makes me feel good.”
Staying true to his passion for running, Potter helped organize the “Butterflies and Bridges Run” that once benefitted the local school system.
“Starting back in 2008 or 2009, we started putting on a race for the Selma City Schools Athletic Department,” he said. “We did that up until about two years ago.”
Potter has also helped with Get Fit Selma! and Selma City School’s Aim for Excellence 5K.
“It’s just getting out and meeting people and watching them have a good time,” he said. “I feel like I’m paying a little bit back for all that I have gained over the years.”
Potter said he knows the community is grateful for the work he and others do to ensure the community prospers, but it is him that is most honored and gratified to be able to serve.
