The Selma City Council had a special called meeting on Friday at City Hall to discuss two issues.
The only council members not present were Sam Randolph and Miah Jackson. City Attorney and Probate Judge-elect Jimmy Nunn, City Finance Officer Ronita Wade, City Clerk Ivy Harrison and Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sheryl Smedley were also present.
The council unanimously approved an ordinance for Alternative Signature for Contracts. When Mayor Darrio Melton is either absent or declines to sign a contract, Council President Corey Bowie has the authorization to sign.
“If the Mayor is absent or won’t sign the contract, it gives an extra cushion to the council to sign it,” Nunn said.
By state law, the ordinance is on first read. The next step is the council vote at the next city council meeting on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. at city hall.
However, Nunn said all contracts will still go through Melton. Nunn also said by law the Mayor should see all contracts and bonds required for judicial proceeding.
Multiple calls were made to Melton and he didn’t respond for comment.
The council also voted unanimously to have someone look into the technology issues at city hall.
Bowie said his laptop shutdown this week at city hall. He also talked with a computer expert and suggested they come in to talk with the city’s IT Department.
Bowie also said someone has agreed to pay for the costs, but he didn’t mention any names.
The next city council work session will be held on Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. at city hall.
