The Selma Career Center, located at 1112 Water Avenue, is hosting its Workshop on Career Choices on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 9 a.m.

Career Center manager, Clifford Hunter said the event is a reoccurring one and the organization’s goal is to help job seekers in their search.

“The job shop is a monthly activity that we do here at the Career Center for job seekers here in the community to help them be prepared for the work force,” he said. “It’s a soft skill opportunity for them. The topics change monthly.”

Collaboration with local community leaders is also a main part of the monthly workshops.

“We conduct the job shops or we invite local partners to come in and conduct these job shops,” he said.

The guest speaker for this month’s workshop will be City Council president Corey Bowie.

Bowie will speak about the importance of soft skills and how they can affect the job search. Some examples of soft skills are problem-solving skills, strong work ethic, time management abilities and good communication skills.

“There are jobs here, but we have to have our people prepared for the workforce,” he said. “What is lacking are those soft skills, that’s what you hear those employers talk about. The goal of the Career Center, when we’re putting on these job shops, is to help them bridge the gap with those soft skills so they would be more marketable in the workforce.”

Aside from the job shops, the Career Center offers several other resources to job seekers.

Some of their other resources include, but are not limited to: employment registration and job search, resume writing and interview guidance, job referrals and placement assistance, job search workshops work, financial aid and training referral, work-based learning, internship training, on the job training, youth programs, adult education services, veterans’ services and vocational rehabilitation services.
