A bond hearing was set for one of the suspects that shot Selma Police Department officer Michael Hale Thursday morning in the Dallas County Courthouse.
Bond was set at $5 million for Kevin Johnson, 21, for attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle, according to Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson.
The bond was set in the courtroom of Dallas County District Court Judge Bob Armstrong.
Hale was wounded but survived the ambush-style shooting on Sunday morning. Hale was on patrol when someone shot into his patrol car using a high-powered rifle. SPD said multiple people were involved. The slug pierced the officer’s bulletproof vest and entered his chest. The officer sped away but lost control of the police cruiser and crashed.
Selma Mayor Darrio Melton praised Hales’ dedication at a press conference on Monday at city hall.
“Officer Hale’s one of the most humble officers we’ve had,” Melton said. “When I visited him at the hospital (Sunday), he said, ‘Mayor, I signed up for hazardous duty to make sure we protect the citizens of Selma.”
A preliminary hearing for Johnson will be held on Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m.
