Final rally too late for Hornets in loss to Greensboro

The Dallas County Lady Hornets lost in straight sets to Greensboro on Thursday afternoon in Plantersville.
In the first two sets, Greensboro jumped ahead to early leads. It took several points for the Hornets to adjust, but they tried to close the gap before losing the first set 25-19.
Greensboro didn’t let the Hornets sneak back into the second game and won decisively 25-13. Greensboro found a hole in front of the back line that their servers took advantage of before Dallas County could make the switch to cut off the weak spot.
“Our defense was pretty good, but we have to work a little harder,” Dallas County head coach Kierra Armstead said.
The Hornets played their best game with their backs against the wall in the third set. The Dallas County girls aren’t scared to dive for balls, and many of those dives kept balls alive.
“In the third set, they started working with each other and worked really hard,” Armstead said.
The Hornets even had a lead at several points throughout the game, but they weren’t able to hold it. Greensboro had two strong hitters that kept Dallas County off balance trying to prepare for a kill shot or a soft tip to a dead zone in the defense.
“I had to adjust the back row because that was the only thing she hit far away,” Armstead said. “I had to adjust them and tell them to switch up their position because that is where they got most of their hits.”
Ultimately, the Hornets lost the final set 25-20 and the match was finished.
The Hornets fell below .500 on the season, now with a 3-4 record. The loss to Greensboro also brought their region record to 1-2.
“This was an area game, so it would’ve been nice to win,” Armstead said. “But it also keeps us in second, so we still have Sumter Central. After that game, they’ll be able to tell what position we’re in.”
