Morgan Academy’s six-game winning streak was snapped Thursday night as the No. 6 Senators (6-2) lost 26-7 to the No. 7 Bessemer Academy Rebels (5-3).
Not only did the winning streak end, but the Rebels also delivered the Senators its first region loss of the season. Before Friday’s games are even played, the Rebels have managed to match the Senators with a 2-1 region record.
“We didn’t catch any breaks,” Morgan head coach Josh Thacker said. “We had touchdown reception called back. We fumbled on the 5-yard line. The game can go either direction at that point.”
The Senators, who have blown out opponents in five of its eight ball games, were unable to match their typical offensive production. Prior to Thursday’s game, the Senators only scored less than 20 points once.
Senators quarterback Jeremy Lee injured his non-throwing arm on the second play of the game, but stayed in the game. The offense was held in check, and Holt Utsey’s long touchdown run in the second half was Morgan Academy’s only score of the game.
Morgan Academy was averaging 39 points per game going into the Bessemer game, but the Rebels defense was able to shut the Senators down.
The Rebels were leading 7-0 at halftime, but two quick scores after the break provided enough distance between themselves and the Senators.
Morgan’s defense which hadn’t allowed more than 14 points since the season opening overtime loss, wasn’t able to contain Bessemer’s offense.
“We thought, coming into this game, Bessemer was one of the best teams in the state,” Thacker said. “We walked off the field tonight knowing that we are one of the best teams in the state.”
The Senators have two region games remaining on its schedule. Next Friday, they face Kingwood Christian at home, and then host No. 3 Tuscaloosa Academy on Oct. 19.
