SCBOE presents capital plan

Last week, the Selma City School Board of Education (SCBOE) members discussed their five-year capital improvement plan.

The list has projects including roofing repairs and classroom renovations.

The first priority is roofing repairs at Edgewood Elementary School.

This project would remove three tab 25-year shingles and replace them. The estimated project budget is $50,000.

The second priority is roofing at Sophia P. Kingston Elementary School.

The estimated budget for this project is $185,000.

The next roofing project at Knox Elementary is an estimated $225,000, and would be completed in 2023 as a projection.

R.B. Hudson is also on the list concerning the changing of the school to a STEAM Academy.

The projected cost would be $1,191,000, and would be completed the next school year.

Classroom renovations at Edgewood Elementary School is on the list at an estimated $75,000, and replacing the exhaust fans and hood to meet fire codes at Meadowview Elementary School would cost an estimated $40,000.

Vent repair also is on the list for the School of Discovery at an estimated $40,000, and also at Cedar Park Elementary School.

Roofing at Payne Elementary is the tenth priority with an estimated $150,000.

Adding a gym at Kingston Elementary to accommodate the sixth-grade campus is the eleventh priority on the list.

It is an estimated $300,000 project.

The last project mentioned is R.B. Hudson’s staff parking lot. The plan is to add 2-inches of asphalt on the existing staff lot, which is 150-feet by 80-feet.

Selma City School Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams said these projects are all a “wish list.” Williams also said that these projects must be presented to the state each year, and that it would allow the state department to know what extra funds would be used for should there be any.
