2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics movement, and Selma High School played host to county and city schools who participated in the athletic games.
Surrounding school districts including Dallas County, Lowndes County, Wilcox County and Perry County attended the event.
“Selma City Schools is excited to continue being part of a worldwide program that promotes inclusion and acceptance for all,” said Courtney Washington, the community engagement specialist for Selma City Schools. “The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Special Olympics changes the lives of millions of athletes in 174 countries.”
Washington said over 65 athletes participated.
