The Dallas County Hornets ended their football season with a win over Ellwood Christian Eagles 49-0.
Both teams had experienced a series of losses all season leaving this game the last chance to get a “W” on the board.
With the scoreboard experiencing technical difficulties, the time of the game was kept on the field with the referees.
The first quarter saw Hornet touchdowns. One with a 39-yard pass from No. 14 Calvin Griffin to No. 4.
The extra two points were gained by No. 10 Se’Vaughn Brown leaving the score 8-0.
The next touchdown from the Hornets was an 18-yard pass from Griffin to Brown with Griffin gaining the two-point conversion, and leaving the score now 16-0.
In the second quarter, a 15-yard pass from Griffin to No. 7 Frederico Tyre made the score 22-0 with the Hornets missing the two-point conversion.
No. 25 Jalyn Callens intercepted the Ellwood ball bringing the offense back on the field, which allowed Griffin and No. 2 Anthonie Rubin a chance to make a 13-yard run, but again missing the two-point conversion leaving the score at 28-0.
After halftime, the Hornets came back with an 8-yard run from No. 27 Aaron Fails, and a pass from Griffin to Brown secured the two-point conversion leaving the score 36-0.
Another 10-yard run from Brown widened the score more leaving Ellwood trailing 42-0.
In the fourth quarter, one more 8-yard run from No. 21 Amari Thomas left the final score at 49-0.
The Hornets (1-9) were decimated by injuries all season long and forced to play several freshmen. ECA (0-10) has lost 36 straight games.
Hornets coach Zeke Pigg said he learned a lot his first season at Dallas County.
“It has been up and down this whole year,” he said. “Lot of firsts this year. We started the year off with injuries with the starting quarterback. Then the next quarterback got hurt. At one point I thought three quarterbacks would be out for a year, but one came back and ended up playing receiver for us. We were sitting on a fourth string quarterback and he’s a sophomore. On our offense line, there’s only one senior on the offense line, and the next guy up was a freshman.
“All the other players are freshmen and sophomores on the whole offense, and defensively I have five freshmen,” said Pigg. “We are very young. I think we are going to be very good in spots. It may not be next year, but it is going to be next. We have to mature and we improve every game. Experience matters when you look at small high school football in 4A. If you don’t have experience, it is tough.
“They came out tonight, they did it the right way, and we ended up pulling out a victory, and that’s going to help us in the next season,” said Pigg. “Hats off to them (Ellwood) it is tough when you only have a handful of players, but I think a lot of teams have been through injuries, but we were able to pull through that.”
High ankle sprain but we wanat to make sure. Jason Holmes senior.
“We are going to work in the off season and one of the good things is we are only losing three seniors on this year’s team, so that is something we can build on next year,” said Eagles coach Migeual Catlin. “We had a lot of blown assignments, and I think that is just being immature in football. Our focus in the off season is getting better and to learn the basics.”
