This year has been a year of change for the Selma City School system.

With the talk of school consolidation, the system will experience a whirlwind of changes in the next few years should the Selma City School Board of Education decide to go through with closing schools.

Last week, the board heard a facility assessment presentation that presents a new problem for the school: infrastructure repair for Byrd First Class Learning Center and the School of Discovery.

The assessment states to bring Byrd Elementary to current day operational and code standards, a complete renovation is needed at an estimated cost of approximately $115 per square foot or $4,255,000. This does not include fees, environmental studies, geotechnical investigations, special inspections or the addition of gymnasium and parking.

The biggest issue of Byrd, the hall flooring, would alone cost an estimated $1 million to repair.

To bring the School of Discovery to current day operational and code standards, a complete renovation is needed at an estimated cost of approximately $115 per square foot or $6,683,685. This does not include fees, environmental studies, geotechnical investigations or special inspections.

These schools also are possible schools that could be closed and consolidated.

So the question remains on what to do with these buildings.

Students use these facilities now, and while some of the problems are in areas that are not where students are in the school, they are still problems that need to be addressed.
