The local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) delivered items for homeless veterans at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Administration’s Selma Community based Outreach Clinic on Monday morning.
Rod Stone, Adjacent at the VFW Post Selma 3016 and members of the Auxiliary, handed out ground mats, blankets, gloves and numerous toiletries to the clinic for further disbursement to keep warm during the fall and winter seasons.
Stone, a 10-year disabled Vietnam veteran in the U.S. Navy, said the items were donated by local businesses. The ground mats were homemade by volunteers who ‘graciously’ provided their time.
“It means a lot to help out because you have people out there not as fortunate as us,” Stone said. “We do a lot of things in the community. Our community is always helping whenever we need them to.”
Brenda McCary, a social worker for the Outreach Clinic, said she’s grateful that the VFW Post Selma 3016 and local businesses stepped up to help the veterans.
“This means a lot to our homeless veterans,” McCary said. “It makes sure some of their basic needs are met. We’re excited the local VFW post thought about us to do this and we appreciate it.”
