Morgan Academy split its Thanksgiving Tournament.
Gunner Henderson scored 18 points as the Senators routed Southern Academy 70-34 in the finals of the Morgan Academy Pepsi Classic on Tuesday night.
Henderson, who signed a baseball scholarship at Auburn University, was named Tournament MVP and made the All-Tournament team. Dionne Allen and Mason Perkins both made the All-Tournament team for the Senators (3-1).
“We pressed pretty well and that led to a lot of easy baskets,” Senators coach Mark Knight said. “We hit open shots. That’s the best we’ve played so far this season. “
Henderson said it was great to play during Thanksgiving break. Baseball America considers Henderson as the state’s top-rated baseball recruit.
“It was a great team win,” Henderson said. “It’s great to play games before Thanksgiving. Now we’ve played some games, we think about the holidays.”
The Senators came out red-hot, jumping out to a 9-0 lead and 24-5 after one quarter. Henderson had eight points, while Allen added five.
Morgan Academy went to its bench in the second quarter, building a 42-17 halftime lead. Henderson hit a lay-up at the second quarter buzzer.
From there, the Senators emptied their bench and all of the players got significant minutes on the court.
“I rotated a lot of guys tonight,” Knight said. “We’re a pretty deep team. It was a total team victory.”
Southern Academy had two players record double-doubles: Kurt Tucker (15 points and 10 rebounds) and Brian Osburn (12 points and 10 rebounds. Both made the All-tournament team for Southern Academy.
Southern Academy girls 44, Morgan Academy 35: The Lady Senators dropped a heartbreaker in the tournament finals. Augusta Arnold finished with 22 points and was named the Tournament’s MVP for Southern Academy.
The Lady Senators trailed 35-34 with less than a minute left and had a chance to take the lead, but a technical foul ended their hopes. Arnold hit 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch to ice the game for Southern Academy.
Faith Lane led the Lady Senators with 13 points. Lane and Ellie Adams both made the All-Tournament team for Morgan Academy.
