The Dallas County Commission is considering an Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) grant application for a mixed-use trail system with the city of Selma.

Will Barrett of ADECA and Clay Carmichael of the Black Belt Region Group spoke Monday at the County Commission meeting on Monday at the Dallas County Courthouse to explain the process. The trails will be on the city and county property.

The commission will vote on the resolution at its next meeting on Dec. 10 at 4 p.m. in the Dallas County Courthouse.

Barrett said the application deadline is noon on Dec. 21 and the bids will be announced sometime in March.  He also said it won’t cost neither the city nor county anything and the city will be responsible for maintenance of the trails.

The Selma City Council passed a resolution on Nov. 13 authorizing the Dallas County Commission to process the application.

“It’s a good project for the city and county,” Dallas County Probate Judge and Commission chairman Kim Ballard said. “Until the grant is rewarded, we still have time to back out.”

“The city residents and the people visiting the city will enjoy the trail system,” Barrett said.

Carmichael said Asphalt Engineers is committed to do the labor on the trails. He also said in kind services will be provided by the city and Black Belt Region. He estimates $40,000 of in kind services.

“We’ve looked at $150,000 of grant money, as soon as we can get a resolution,” Carmichael said.
