Selma City Councilwoman Jannie Thomas spent Wednesday afternoon with kids from Perry Varner Detention Center cleaning up part of the city.
The group, members of the Perry Varner boot camp, helped Thomas clean up parts of Highland Street, Church Street, Lapsley Street and Summerfield Road. The area stretched from Dominos’ Pizza to Burger King.
“It was very to have the boot camp come out here and help,” Thomas said. “The kids are doing a great thing,”
Priscilla Mitchell, Perry Varner volunteer, said she appreciates Thomas’ dedication to her Ward 7 district.
“Councilwoman Thomas is very serious and really cares about her community,” Mitchell said. “Before, the area was an eyesore.”
Mitchell also said it was a great opportunity for the youth to be part of a community service project.
“These young men need to be involved and know what’s going on in the community,” Mitchell said.
