Valley Grande held its only City Council meeting of the month on Monday night.

The originally scheduled meeting for Dec. 3 didn’t take place because only three council members were present: Tammy Troha, Ronald Sawyer and Jimmy Johnson. Quorum wasn’t made without Mayor Matt Dobbs and council members Lamar Morgan and Tim White.

Troha expressed regret over the cancellation of Valley Grande’s annual Christmas in the Park program on Dec. 8 at Valley Grande City Park. The

“I hate we had to cancel it because of the weather,” Troha said.

Valley Grande Public Safety Director Boyd Pugh said he only had four calls, but two of those were fatalities.

Pugh also said the boat can’t be put into the lagoon until the dirt gets moved. Once the dirt is moved, the boat can go into the lagoon.

Morgan said the building is completed, but the property needs two loads of gravel. He’s also trying to find a price on electrical inside. The council unanimously voted to purchase the two loads of gravel.

The council also voted unanimously to donate $2,500 to the Drug Task Force. Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson talked to some members of the council and Dobbs said it was a good idea.

Three business owners in Valley Grande addressed the council over its increase for business licenses: Robbie Rose, Carl Jones and Sara Day. The fees for licenses went from $87 to $112.

Jones, who owns a funeral home, said the increase could discourage businesses from entering the city.

Dobbs said the move wasn’t made just to make one.

“It’s a state recommended schedule, we didn’t do this randomly,” Dobbs said. “We’re catching up with the rest of the state.”
