The inaugural Holloway Baseball Skills camp had a strong showing on Saturday morning at Bloch Park.

Over 30 participants between the ages of 7 and 19 competed and learned different skills under Selma University baseball coach Adrian Holloway.

Holloway, who is also Selma U’s Athletic Director, said he was thrilled with the players that showed up. Selma U. baseball players and assistant coaches were among the volunteers who assisted Holloway with the one-day camp.

“I’m pleased with the turnout,” Holloway said. “We wanted to give back to the community and give the kids something to do over the Christmas holidays.”

Several players from Selma High and Dallas County High School took part in camp and enjoyed the process.

Saints junior third baseman Amarian Molette, a member of The Selma Times-Journal’s All Dallas County team, used the camp to fine-tune his skills.

“To me, it’s an honor to be out here with top coaches to show what I have in baseball,” Molette said.

Molette’s two Selma teammates, junior pitcher Jacorey Brown and first baseman Deandre Chestnut, agreed. Chestnut, an eighth-grader at R.B. Hudson Middle School, said he will play for the varsity.

“This camp will improve me for the baseball season,” Brown said. “I need to work on my basic skills and accuracy.”

Two Dallas County players, catcher Demarckus Smiley and Johnathan Brown, enjoyed learning from Holloway, who played baseball at Alabama State University and spent time in the minor leagues.

“I came to the camp to improve myself and get some work in before baseball season starts,” Smiley said.
