The American Cancer Society (ACS) is looking for local teams, volunteers and sponsors to participate in its annual Relay for Life of Dallas County.
ACS officials said the event in Dallas County will be announced sometime during the spring. Dallas County joins over 5,000 communities and countries throughout the world each year with Relay for Life events. Relay for Life is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer, as the ACS raises funds for cancer research.
Dallas County raised $104,665 last year, which Relay for Life event team lead Alvin Craig said was a success.
“Every passionate step taken demonstrates courage and strength,” Craig said. “Together, we are bigger than cancer, and funds raised by local teams and sponsors help the American Cancer Society get closer to finding a cure for this dreaded disease.”
The Dallas County event was held on June 1, 2018 at Selma Lions Park. It began with a cancer survivors lap, care-givers lap and the real men wear pink lap. The night concluded with a release of sky lanterns in honor of those who died from cancer.
Here are the first-place winners: Morgan family and friends (family team), Byrd and parents (schools), Walmart (local businesses), Greater St. Paul (churches) and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Civic Organizations). Team Orrville had the most donations and Diane Harris was the top overall individual fundraiser with a total of $1,371. Walmart was the top overall fundraiser, raising over $21,000.
“Relay teams, volunteers, sponsors, are also bringing hope to those who are currently fighting cancer as we celebrate the lives of our local cancer survivors and caregivers,” ACS Senior Community Manager Bridget Mills said. “This event brings the community together for One Day, One Night as One Community with One Fight…to save lives from cancer.”
