Last week, the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) released letter grades for each school district in the Accountability System Section of the Alabama Unified Report (AUR), in compliance with mandates from the state and federal governments.

In a press release Dec. 28, the department stated that the full AUR reports, which include a breakdown of how these scores were calculated and provide an in-depth look at schools in various districts across the state, would be made available Dec. 31.

The law mandates that the full reports be made available by the end of each year.

On Wednesday, ALSDE Public Information Specialist Ed Crenshaw stated that the reports would be made available by noon on the department’s website following a “little delay.”

While the report for the entirety of the Alabama school system was available, visitors to the website were still unable to view specific details regarding each school system throughout the state.

The department did not respond to a request for further information regarding the delay.

Overall, the Alabama school system scored an 80, a letter grade of B, for 2017-2018 school year.

The system scored 66.38 percent in Academic Achievement, which is determined based on the percentage of students proficient in English/reading and math. The system scored 91.58 percent in Academic Growth, based on the number of students showing improved in the aforementioned areas, and 89 percent in Graduation Rate.

Overall, the state school system scored 71.46 percent in College and Career Readiness and 18.28 percent in Chronic Absenteeism, the percentage of students with 15 or more absences in a school year.

The report also provided demographic data for the state school system, which shows that 53.23 percent of Alabama students are economically disadvantaged, 12.79 percent are students with disabilities, 2.07 percent are homeless and .14 percent are migrants.

Information of this nature will be available for Selma City Schools and Dallas County Schools when the full reports are posted to the ALSDE website.
