The City of Selma Finance Committee will hold a meeting Tuesday with representatives from Revenue Discovery Systems (RDS) to discuss tax collections, taxpayer services and other topics.
The meeting will take place at 3 p.m. in the council chamber at city hall and is open to the public.
“We’re trying to make sure everyone is in compliance remitting their taxes in a timely manner,” said Selma City Council President Corey Bowie, who chairs the city’s Finance Committee. “It’s important that all parties are at the table.”
Bowie said that, along with discussing how to effectively collect taxes from local businesses and “maximize” what is owed to the City of Selma, the meeting will likely discuss more “extreme measures” that can be taken to collect unpaid taxes, which are due on the 20th of every month.
According to Bowie, the committee will likely consider following the lead of other cities, which require business owners behind on their payments to appear before the council and risk having their licenses revoked.
“That would hopefully be a last measure,” Bowie said. “We want businesses to work with RDS and the City of Selma.”
Additionally, Bowie said, the committee will discuss the extension of workshops hosted by RDS for the purpose of educating and training businesses on how to properly file their taxes each month.
“It’s important that we can learn communicate together,” Bowie said.
Further, the meeting will give committee members to learn more about taxes they are less familiar with, such as entertainment and vendor taxes, and ensure that the city is receiving every bit of revenue it is due.
