A Stop the Violence rally was held Monday in downtown Selma.
The march began on the steps of Brown Chapel AME Church and ended in front of the Edmund-Pettus Bridge. A group of UAB female athletes also walked across Edmund-Pettus bridge and passed through the event.
The annual event was organized by Rev. Michael Bowen of the Safe Haven Center. Guests included former State Sen. Hank Sanders, Sen. Malika Sanders-Fortier, D-Selma, and Circuit Court Judges Marvin Wiggins and Collins Pettaway.
“We’re having this event because of the gun violence and murders in Selma,” Bowen said.
Sanders-Fortier, who succeeded her father, said it’s always great to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who would’ve turned 90 this week.
“It’s wonderful to have this blessing 50 years after Dr. King was killed, it’s wonderful to have this blessing 90 years after he was born,” Sanders-Fortier said.
