The Selma City Council will open up bids to radio stations in Dallas County to broadcast council meetings.
Paul Alexander, the president of Scott Communications, attended a council work session Jan. 17 to propose the city council meetings be broadcasted on WJAM 94.7 FM.
City Council President Corey Bowie said WJAM’s fee for broadcasts was $500 per show for a total of $6,000 a year. Mayor Darrio Melton’s weekly show airs on Friday at 9 a.m. and it costs $150 per show, $600 monthly. The city is paying for Melton’s show.
Bowie said every radio station in Dallas County should have an opportunity at landing the bid. He plans on sending letters out to all of the radio stations in the county.
Councilman John Leashore agreed with Bowie.
“This is nothing personal, Mr. Alexander, but it should be bidded out to other stations,” Leashore said.
Alexander said the city council is always welcome at WJAM.
“If this is the end of the road, please send us special events or what you want your constituents to know,” Alexander said. “I appreciate the opportunity.”
Melton can also be heard every Friday at 9 a.m. on WJAM 94.7 FM for his weekly radio show.
