A Selma resident was sentenced 10 years in U.S. Federal Court Wednesday for being in possession of firearms after a felony conviction.

Brandon Ward received a 10-year sentence for being a felon in possession when he shot Joseph Childers, according to Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson.

Ward pled guilty to possession of a High Point, 9mm pistol found in his possession on Sept. 14, 2017.  Before Sepember. 2017, Ward had been convicted of three felonies in Dallas County Circuit Court, first-degree burglary, first-degree receiving stolen property and discharging a firearm into an occupied building. The incident took place on the 1900 block of Tippett Drive.

Jackson said Ward is being charged with attempted murder for an incident that occurred on Dec. 10, 2017.  He also said the attempted murder charge will be coming up in state court next month.

Sgt. Ray Blanks of the Selma Police Department (SPD) said Ward was arrested by the Marion Police Department on Dec. 10, 2017 after he led officers on a vehicle pursuit. Officers responded to a call and found Childers shot inside his residence. Ward allegedly shot Childers after he demanded money from him.

Jackson credits the teamwork of the federal government and state government cooperating with local officials.

“We are all working together with the federal government to make sure these defendants who are charged with violent state charges also get federal charges,” Jackson said.
