The Selma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and its Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy will be sponsoring the 2019 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEM/STEAM) Conference on Saturday at Wallace Community College-Selma.
Onsite registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. The opening session will start at 8 a.m. with a 15-minute keynote speaker and presenter, followed by the breakout workshops. The session will conclude with a wrap-up session.
The organization’s goal is to provide a hands-on, fun and non-instructive introduction of STEAM to girls in grades 5-8, and ages 11 through 14.
Athelstein Johnson and Sadie Moss, two members of the Delta chapter, are the co-chairpersons for Delta Academy. Dr. Sherica Hather is in the sorority and also contributes to the Academy.
Johnson said the events provide opportunities for the girls to improve their education, social, civic and cultural skills.
“The idea behind the conference style approach is to expose the girls to a variety of learning experiences in a non-classroom format and utilize presenters without burn-out,” Johnson said.
Johnson said the goal is to reach 300 girls from the sorority’s service areas of Dallas, Lowndes, and Perry counties.
Lunch,T-shirts and backpacks will be given to the participants.
