Robert E. Lee showed Ellwood Christian Academy why the Generals are the state’s second-ranked Class 7A team.
De’Marquiese Miles scored 18 points and made eight assists as the Generals pounded ECA 66-34 on Saturday at Wallace Community College-Selma.
The Generals took control from the opening tip, scoring the game’s first 13 points and led 23-3 after one quarter. ECA missed 12 of 13 shots in the game’s first eight minutes.
R.E. Lee continued its scoring onslaught in the second quarter, increasing its lead to 36-15 at halftime. The Generals led 54-27 after three quarters and played their reserves in the game’s final eight minutes.
Isaiah Fenn was the Generals’ other double-digit scorer, finishing with 13 points.
The game was a rout despite Generals star center Demond Robinson being saddled with foul trouble. The six-foot-eight Robinson, who signed with Murray State, finished with six points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
ECA didn’t have a double-digit scorer, as Quinton Jones led the Eagles with nine points.
ECA coach Willie Shears saw the rout as a positive for the Eagles, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.
“I wanted to play a tough schedule to get us ready for the state tournament,” Shears said. “Our last loss came against Bob Jones in the Hoover Tournament on Dec. 29, 2018. Bob Jones is also a 7A school. I’m grateful Robert E. Lee was willing to come down and play us. They have a great program.”
Robert E. Lee girls 60, ECA 11: Tyra Jefferson led the Lady Generals with 20 points, A’jae Nathan added 16 and Makesha Smith scored 12.
The Lady Eagles went scoreless in the second half after scoring nine points in the second quarter. Domeria Pratt led ECA with four points.
