The Dallas County Commission approved several items at its meeting on Monday afternoon.
The Commission approved to donate $10,000 to the Drug Task Force Appropriation headed by Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson. Jackson asked for $20,000, but said he was grateful for the donation. The amount was amended into the County’s budget.
Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn praised Jackson for his dedication on stopping crime in the area.
“We appreciate the work you’re doing,” Nunn said.
The commission also passed a resolution for supporting Rep. Terri Sewell and other state officials for the increase in Alabama’s gasoline and diesel fuel taxes to fund Dallas County’s roads and bridges.
The Commission are looking into three locations for voter registration and voter photo I.D. as requested by Secretary of State John Merrill. Orrville, E.M. Brown Community Center, and either Beloit or Valley Grande.
Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum was approved by the commission to get a few estimates for the installation of metal detectors at the County Courthouse and County Annex. Each building would get one detector each.
Dallas County Attorney John Kelly said getting metal detectors is long overdue for the courthouse.
Nunn was approved for appointment to the Alabama Tombigbee Executive Board.
Here are the other items approved by the commission: 2019 millage rates, January budget revisions, Cahaba Blueway Trailhead sign, 2018 disposed assets, Dallas County levies for Alcohol licensing and bad debt write offs for 2018 on Jim Minor Garden Homes.
Nunn said he’s pleased with the start of his stint at probate judge, but thanked county officials and the commission: Valerie Reubin, Roy Moore, Larry Nickles and Curtis Williams.
“I haven’t been in office a month, but everything’s been running smoothly,” Nunn said. “It’s not because of me. It’s because Dallas County has good department heads.’’
The next commission meeting will be held on Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. in the Dallas County courthouse.
