Top-ranked Morgan Academy won the Gulf Shores Baseball Tournament on Thursday night.
The Senators (17-0) beat Jackson High School (Tennessee) 5-4 in the tournament finals. In the semifinals, Morgan Academy beat Roff High (Oklahoma) 5-4.
Morgan Academy coach Stephen Clements said he’s proud of the Senators, who won all six games in the tournament. Morgan Academy is ranked No. 1 in the AISA poll.
“Anytime you get to take your team out of their element to go compete in a big tournament like this, there are a few things you look for,” Clements said. “I think we competed well all week and did all the little things it takes to win ball games.”
In the championship game, Jeremy Lee homered and David Ducote had two hits for the Senators. Andrew Thomas earned the victory, going 5 2/3 innings. Brayton Brown earned the save, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings and allowing only two hits.
Against Roff High School, the Senators overcame a 4-0 deficit. Jeremy Lee delivered an RBI double and scored the game’s winning run in the eighth inning. David DuCote led the Senators with three hits and scored once. Brayton Brown scored twice and had an RBI. Gunnar Henderson got the win in relief, striking out nine in six innings.
The Senators went 4-0 in games played between Monday and Wednesday to earn the tournament’s top seed. Clements said he was pleased with how the Senators performed in those games.
“Early in the week, we were swinging the bat great and the pitching staff did a great job of attacking the strike zone for the entire tournament,” Clements said.
Clements added that the week on the Gulf Coast was great for the Senators.
“We had a great week of team events and spent some much-needed time together away from school,” Clements said. “This was a great start to the second half of the season and area play, I just want to see us keep improving and trying to battle on every pitch. We have a great mixture of senior leadership and some underclassmen that are doing a great job. Assistant coach Lebo Jones did a great job”
Clements credited Morgan Academy headmaster Tyler Knight and Athletic Director Josh Thacker for the Senators’ unbeaten start.
“Our support from the headmaster, athletic director could not be better and their leadership is huge on us,” Clements said. “The parents at Morgan are also vital to our program. They are all on the same page and helps the program in so many ways. We also used this trip to have team devotions and try to bring our team closer to Christ.”
