For the second straight year, the Alabama State University football team will have a scrimmage in Selma.

The Hornets will have a “Stop the Violence” scrimmage on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. The event is free to the public.

The event is being hosted by the Selma-Dallas County ASU Alumni Association.

“We hope the whole community comes out,” ASU’s Selma-Dallas County  Alumni Coordinator Ronald Brown said. “The focus on the scrimmage is for the youth to see teamwork and discipline.”

Former Southside High School star De’Quan Johnson plays for the Hornets. He was The Selma Times-Journal’s football player of the year in 2016.

ASU coach Donald Hill-Eley said he’s looking forward to visiting the Queen City again.

“It’s part of us giving back and it’s another opportunity to engage with the community,” Hill-Eley said. “We want to be visual mentors in our community. A lot of our young players have never been to Selma. It’s an opportunity for them to see a historic area. We’re trying to create exposure for our university and our football program.”

Last year marked the first time a Division I football program had a full practice at Memorial Stadium that was free and open to the public.
