Stay united, Selma

I’ve been here for enough time now that some annual events that we write about are starting to come back around.
From Jazz on the Grass to Fourth of July celebrations, there is a lot coming up in the next few months.
One particular event and it is one that was one of the first stories I covered when I moved to Selma is the UNITED for the City Youth Camp.
This year, it will be from June 9-14 and is $75 for registration, according to their Facebook page.
The UNITED For the City has already been active this year with a recent Flag Celebration and Retirement Ceremony at R.B. Hudson Middle School on Monday.
That event brought not only the R.B. Hudson students together but the various veteran and religious associations throughout the area as well.
Being able to see firsthand the impact these previous Youth Camp participants had on the neighborhoods they were involved with was a sight to see and inspiring that if these teenagers can make a difference then why can’t the rest of us who constantly talk about it?
There’s still time to register for this event.
Individual deposits are due ($50) by May 20 and final forms and payments are due May 31.
All payments and forms can be sent to Elkdale Baptist Church at 2221 Elkdale St. in Selma.
They can also be sent digitally to ashley.mason@elkdale.org.
All forms can be found at bit.ly/UNITEDFortheCity2019.
This event started with one simple question: What would the Dallas County and Selma community look like if the entire body of Christ were united to serve our community?
From observing a small group of high school students and adults in Dothan that participated in what was called WIRED 2017, the ideas for UNITED For the City were formed.
The positivity this event brings to the area is much needed.
It helps fight the negative image that this area can sometimes have.
It is important to support events like this and to continue to prove people wrong about this area that we are more than just the crime and violence this area is unfortunately known for.
Stay united, Selma because the world is watching.
