Fighting sickness-Support needed to fight Cystic Fibrosis

Today a mother and daughter are teaming up once again for their annual fundraiser to help fund the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which is an organization dedicated to finding a cure for the disease through research.

According to the foundation, Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time.

In people with CF, mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene cause the CFTR protein to become dysfunctional. When the protein is not working correctly, it’s unable to help move chloride — a component of salt — to the cell surface. Without the chloride to attract water to the cell surface, the mucus in various organs becomes thick and sticky.

In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps germs, like bacteria, leading to infections, inflammation, respiratory failure, and other complications. For this reason, minimizing contact with germs is a top concern for people with CF.

In the pancreas, the buildup of mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that help the body absorb food and key nutrients, resulting in malnutrition and poor growth. In the liver, the thick mucus can block the bile duct, causing liver disease. In men, CF can affect their ability to have children.

The foundation adds that people with this disease have inherited two copies of the defective gene, which is one copy from each parent. Both parents must have at least one copy of the defective gene.

This foundation is important to organizers Kay Swift and Kaylee McWherter.

McWherter’s son suffers from Cystic Fibrosis.

The fundraising event is an all-day event and allows for people to work around their schedule to come to contribute.

The day begins with a bake sale at 8 a.m. featuring cakes, bread, pies and cookies.

From 11 a.m.-2 p.m. chicken salad plates will be sold for $9.

Later that evening a silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. in which patrons can bid on a television, furniture, pottery, art and kitchen goods.

Support is needed for this foundation to help find treatments.

The fundrasier will take place at White Force Cottage.
