The MJ 93-90 Foundation announced a new Best Buy Teen Tech Center will soon open up in Selma on Tuesday morning in the Community Room at Trustmark Bank.
At the meeting, put on by the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, MJ 93-90 Treasurer and Secretary Thomasine Johnson, along with other representatives of the project, gave a presentation depicting the vision for the center to members of the community.
The Best Buy Teen Tech Center will be located on the Wallace Community College-Selma campus where it will serve as a safe place for students to learn new technology based skills.
“What we really see this center as is a safe space for kids to come in and learn about different technology they’ve never seen before,” said Best Buy Teen Tech Center Coordinator Adam Pettway.
According to Pettway, the center will hold state-of-the-art computers, photography and filmmaking equipment and 3-D printers.
The goal of the center is to allow children, ages 13-18, to explore the opportunity to build skills for their future and discover their passions.
“Kids need an opportunity to be exposed to what’s out there,” said Johnson.
Though Johnson is excited about the future of the program, she said during the program that the support of the community will be needed to keep the center going.
Johnson asked specifically for volunteers.
“We need local photographers, filmmakers and musicians to give their time to these kids and teach them how to make,” said Johnson.
While the new Best Buy Teen Tech Center was the focus of Tuesday’s program, there was also another big announcement made.
Jimmie Coleman, Manager to Michael Johnson, announced that the MJ 93-90 Foundation is working to bring a music festival to Selma.
The festival, set for July 4, 5 and 6, is said to star several high-profile acts and feature genres of music for everyone’s taste.
Exactly who will come to town and where the festival will be held was not yet revealed, but more information will soon be released.
