The Morgan Academy Student Government Association (SGA) and football team along with Selma City Councilwoman Miah Jackson have collaborated to organize a clean-up at the Historic Old Live Oak Cemetery.

“The effort was initiated by the Morgan Academy SGA and football team. The SGA president, Richard Watters reached out to me by email and invited me to help coordinate their effort as the Ward 3 Representative,” said Jackson. “It is my great honor to serve with them.”

According to Watters, once the newest group of SGA officers were elected in March, they came together and decided to do more community focused projects.

“We thought, what better wat to serve the community than to clean up one of the local cemeteries?” said Watters.

According to Watters, Old Live Oak is currently at a state of uncleanliness he’s never seen before.

“It definitely needs a little work. To be honest, it hurts my heart that such a beautiful and historic place is in such bad shape.” said Watters, “I’ve never seen it so bad.”

Morgan’s SGA, along with their football team, will put their plan into action this Saturday morning from 8 to 10 a.m. Though, according to Watters, the support that Morgan has received from the community has been outstanding, they could still use all the help they can get.

“Absolutely everyone is welcome to come out and help,” said Watters.

Watters added that the clean-up team could use some supplies and equipment from anyone who is willing to help out including rakes, trash bags, gloves, push lawnmowers and hedge clippers.

Jackson commended the Morgan academy students on their enthusiasm for bettering the community.

“To borrow a phrase from my colleague, Angela Benjamin, the actions of the Morgan Academy students put the ‘unity in the community,’” said Jackson. “I am delighted to see young people take the initiative and be part of solving a community need. Their mission to serve is encouraging and admirable.”
