Southside to host football jamboree Friday night

Southside High School will be hosting a football jamboree on Friday night.
Elmore County and Hale County will compete each in a one hour scrimmage against the Panthers, which starts at 6 p.m.
Southside only had 20 players participate in spring drills and the low turnout left Panthers coach Daniel Flowers frustrated.
“Spring drills has been up and down,” Flowers said. “Some of the kids don’t want to come out in the heat and compete. The city of Selma is known as a basketball area. Being a football coach in Selma is not an easy job.”
Flowers, however, saw a few bright spots that will help the Panthers improve upon last year’s winless 0-10 campaign.
“The goal is to be good defensively,” Flowers said. “We’ve got a lot of starters on defense coming back. I like how this small group of players we have out competing. A lot of players talk about competing, but these players are showing it.”
Linebackers Chatavis Sanders, Edgerrin Moore and Chris Bonner will be seniors next year for the Panthers.
Freshman Christopher Thomas is in the mix to start at quarterback, but Flowers indicated the competition will continue through the summer.
“We can’t be as explosive on offense like last year because we don’t have that skill set,” Flowers said.
