Selma Police Department (SPD) Chief Spencer Collier, who announced his retirement Tuesday evening via email, was arrested Thursday in Daphne, according to Daphne Police Department Sgt. Jason Vannoy.
Vannoy said Collier was charged with “false reporting to law enforcement” in relation to a claim that a credit card was fraudulently used.
Vannoy said the issue is “domestic related.”
Collier bonded out of Daphne City Jail and will appear in court July 30.
According to Collier, the incident stems from the use of his bank card by his son without permission.
Collier stated that his son, who previously spent 30 months in federal prison and has struggled with substance abuse issues, has stoled his credit card in the past.
When Collier’s card was used without his permission, he disputed the charge and filed a report with the local police department and listed his son as the person suspected.
Unbeknownst to Collier, his estranged wife allowed their son to use the card without Collier’s knowledge.
In retaliation, his son filed a warrant against him for filing a false report.
“I have no doubt that I will be exonerated, but I am very sorry for any embarrassment that this episode has brought to the city,” Collier said. “This is not how I wanted to retire.”
