Southside High School is in the market for a new football coach and Athletic Director.
Football coach/A.D. Daniel Flowers resigned from Southside High School to become head football coach at Wenonah High School. The Wenonah School Board approved the hiring of Flowers at a meeting last week. He will be only the school’s football coach.
Flowers admitted departing from Southside High is tough after he spent eight years coaching at the Class 3A school.
“It’s difficult to leave Southside,” Flowers said. “But I’ve taken Southside as far as I could and it’s time to see what someone else can do.”
Flowers will represent Southside one more time at the North-South All-Star football game at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl on July 18. He will be an assistant coach for the South All-Star squad.
Flowers replaces Ronald Cheatham, who retired after 30 years. Cheatham, 64, won over 150 games and guided Wenonah to the Class 5A state finals in 2016.
“I feel that I’ve made the best decision for me and my family,” Flowers said. “The opportunity to coach a team that went to the championship game three years ago is exciting. It’s a great choice for me and I had to take this job.”
Wenonah has produced NFL talent. Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams was the third overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2019 NFL Draft. Center Alonzo Ephriam and defensive back Sam Shade also played for the Crimson Tide and enjoyed NFL careers. Former UAB quarterback Joe Webb is currently with the Houston Texans and enters his 10th NFL season.
Southside is the third Dallas County school to change football coaches, joining Selma High and Dallas County High.
